Steal Like an Artist by Karen Little

The book Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon is, in my opinion, the ultimate guide to success and happiness.

Kleon writes that the key to learning and creating anything is to closely observe what you love.

While it might be possible to create something totally unique out of thin air, it’s so unlikely that I can’t even think of an example. Great works in any field are almost always built on the great works that came before them.

This holds true in the visual, kinetic, and musical arts—and it’s just as true for how we grow emotionally. If you want to be happy, identify the people and things that bring you joy.
Observe them. Study them. Then integrate the essence of what you’ve learned into your own life.

Think of others’ actions as your personal GPS. But like any GPS, it only works if you turn it on. Seek what makes you happy. Take notes. Let those insights guide you forward.

If someone you admire smiles a lot, try it yourself. That smile now lives on your face—not theirs—making it uniquely yours. No copyright infringement involved.
